Disappointing. The cover was a poor and drab stab at a Vanity Fair gatefold. Wrong subjects. One of the reasons VF covers work so well is because the people are so beautiful. The backgrounds are invariably irrelevant. It seems to me that in this case both were the latter. Why choose grey? Why do they look dead? Why are they naked? And why is the guy on the left sat on thin air?
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to seeing how the design evolves inside; the art director, Charlie, is top notch. The size change was a complete no brainer and way overdue.
amen brother, a exercise in meaningless narcissism
ReplyDeleteOther than mentioned above, there are just a few too many things going on in there. I'm sure they will weed out a few styles in the upcoming weeks. Like the illustrations though.
ReplyDeleteHe's wondering where the bog roll is.
ReplyDeleteGood heavens! What about the beautiful typographic detailing inside the new Metro? The book pages alone are gorgeous! And that portrait of Shane Carter is brilliant. Ok, Matt Straker is a clever clogs, with some good ideas, but come now... Metro's typography blows The Listener's... far... far out of the water! And, despite the learned critique — (do i have this right? dey NOT PWETTY AS dem HOLLYWOOD FILMSTARS) I haven't seen much studio art direction from Mr Straker either. All the Listener's photographs are shot by some guy called GETTY
